The Grasshopper

The fall is quickly approaching and my mind drifts back to my grade school. Soon kids will be carrying back packs and cell phones, dressed in pajamas and slippers. We didn't have backpacks. We had Pencil cases with pencils, a sharpener and a big rubber eraser inside. Our books -Jack, Jane and spot- were cradled in our arms and our lunch came in a brown paper bag. However, many kids had designer cartoon or superhero lunchboxes. I seem to recall I had one eventually. Mine was red and back checkered. My attire most likely would have been a plaid shirt, tan corduroy bellbottom pants and sneakers. But there's something else I am remembering today. Grasshoppers.

Saint Jules is closed now and will probably be torn down. And the building my grandfather built will be rubble. But I'm thinking of the path and the high grass that grew beside it. The path went from Westminster to Norman Road was a breading ground for grasshoppers.

Hop to it

It takes skill to catch a grasshopper: Some hopped and some flew. You couldn't call yourself a grasshopper hunter if you used a butterfly net; that was cheating. No, you had to catch them with bare hands. Once you caught them you had to put them into something. We didn't have fancy bug collectors with windows so you could see inside. We poked holes in margarine container and squinted. Some of the girls in the neighborhood spent their time netting butterflies. Other kids were collecting caterpillars. But that wasn't sport. We had to hide in the reeds and pounce, hands cupped. Inside the tub the little green guy went. After banging his head, a while he laid in a bed of grass until the dizziness passed looking up at a eyeball looking down on him. Our tiny friend was transported to our backyard and after a short while we let him go.

The hitchhiker

Fast forward to last year. We are driving from Sault Saint Marie through Michigan to get back home. We picked up a hitchhiker along the way. He jumped on in Canada and like us I guess he was trying to get through the border. I don't know if he had family in Michigan, but we are happy to help him along. I always get nervous at border crossings; some agents can be power tripping morons. I was prepared and had my passport out. The bug didn't and he didn't seem to care. Luckily, it was an easy crossing, and I started down the road. Me my partner and the illegal alien hanging on for dear life on the windshield. We were flying down south seventy-five doing sixty-five and that grasshopper kept on hanging on. Passing cars and transports just hanging on. I could see he was alternating his stance. Resting a leg here and there. I must admit it was amazing entertainment. At rest area just outside Cheboygan, MI we needed a little pee break and when we got back to the car our little cling-on friend hoped away. I wonder if he found a way back or if ice got him. I'd hate to see the poor guy a prisoner in a margarine tub holding cell.

Humming

We have a rose of Sharon bush in front of our  living room window. Every year it attracts humingbirds. Now the blooms are bursting with color. I patiently waited for this little guy to return.  Expectation and joy brings colors to life. The fluttering of wings, the souls delight.  To savor the nectar of a the new day. That is just the hummingbirds way. My pics. Hummingbird at home.

A pane in the glass

One pane of glass. One red, white and blue basketball. And one frustrating day in the window repair business.    My father was very good at repairing windows. He had plenty of practice. Our backyard was our arena, our stadium and the scene of many sporting errors.  Who done it? It all started on our one-lane road.  Every homeowner could hear the crack of the bat and then the smash of a ball. Where it came from, no one knew. We split, leaving the bat suspended just above the dust cloud. Not a kid in sight. Who done it was an unsolved mystery. All they could see was the weapon, the bat, the ball and the glass now littering the living room floor. Opps Things were different in our backyard. A wayward slapshot way upstairs. Crash. A change-up and a foul tip. Smash. Today's error: a basketball. A hook shot, nothing but air and glass. Bang. Shortly after the initial impact we heard something else, my father cuss "Friggin Kids" It was the only f word my dad was all...

The Great Gerbal Escape

My high school was having a rodent raffle. Gerbils to be exact. My friend and I decided to buy tickets. The school PA speaker crackled to life in our home room. The PA didn't always work. It did one day when I did my Howard Cosell impression in the cafeteria/Auditorium. Two students were play-fighting, and I called the fight just like Howard. The mic was a prop. So I thought. Little did I know the bout was being broadcast live in every room and hallway. I was a hit. People walked up to me and said how good my impression was. Now, back to the rodents. The speaker chimed in. The winner of the gerbils is Dennis Deschamps.  I jumped from my seat and headed down to the office to pick up my prize. Two gerbils. I was told they were the same sex, so I didn't need to worry about babies. Apparently, this was news to them. My mother, as you will remember, wasn't keen on anything with tails. Our family dog was the only exception. One time, we found a garter snake and brought it into the...
